About “Daybreak / Twilight”

“DAYBREAK / TWILIGHT” is a collection of pieces for solo piano. The two main themes, “DAYBREAK” and “TWILIGHT”, are presented in three variations:

I. Daybreak

II. Twilight / Daybreak

III. Daybreak / Twilight / Daybreak (Reprise)

The original themes of “DAYBREAK” and “TWILIGHT” were initially composed in 2019. Over the years, the two themes were treated as separate movements of one larger work, with their compositional structure varying slightly throughout this period. While “DAYBREAK” easily stands on its own, I always felt that “TWILIGHT” benefited from being performed alongside “DAYBREAK”.

In the summer of 2025, Lancaster High School Percussion Ensemble Director, Bruce Gerken, asked me to write a new piano solo after a member of his ensemble gave the premiere performance of my solo “ANOTHER PLACE” earlier that spring. I felt this was a perfect opportunity for “DAYBREAK / TWILIGHT” to be released. The performer has the option to perform one of three variations of “DAYBREAK / TWLIGHT”. Version 1 is simply “DAYBREAK”. Version 2 is “TWILIGHT” immediately followed by “DAYBREAK”. Version 3 is “DAYBREAK”, immediately followed by “TWILIGHT”, which is immediately followed by a shortened version of “DAYBREAK” titled “DAYBREAK (REPRISE)”.

When listing this piece on a program or in other media, the title should be reflective of the variation being performed. For example, if you are playing version 2, you should list the piece as “Twilight / Daybreak, by Clark Hubbard”. DO NOT list the piece as “Daybreak / Twilight – mvt.ii Twilight / Daybreak, by Clark Hubbard”.
