About “Harvest”

“HARVEST” is a work for concert band commissioned by Lancaster Community Band in memory of Matt Haban.

When I was asked to write a piece for the Lancaster Community Band celebrating Matt Haban, one of the community band’s most dedicated members, I immediately began thinking of ways to tie this composition to Lancaster, Ohio. Lancaster has always had a rich musical tradition and I have been fortunate to have experienced this myself throughout my own life. From the Lancaster Festival, to Friday Night Bandstands, to Community Concerts, to the various churches across town, on any given week of the year you could find yourself listening to live bands playing rock, country, blues, bluegrass, folk, pop, motown, classical, jazz, latin, zydeco, percussion ensemble, steel pan, choral, and of course concert band music (just to name a few genres).

In “HARVEST”, I attempt to capture this wide variety of music available in Lancaster, Ohio by drawing influence and inspiration from both classical and commerical composers – primarily the music of Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland, David Shaffer, and Dave Matthews.

Percussion instruments are divided into the following 4 parts:

  • Percussion 1 – Temple Blocks (5), Snare Drum
  • Percussion 2 – Bass Drum, Triangle
  • Percussion 3 – Crash Cymbals, Temple Blocks (5), Triangle
  • Percussion 4 – Tambourine

For ease of use, the recommended setup for percussion is (from the perspective of the percussionists):

Bass Drum • Triangle • Crash Cymbals • Temple Blocks (5) • Snare Drum

About “Woodgrain”

“WOODGRAIN” is a trio for violin, viola, and marimba commissioned by Timbr(e) Ensemble.

Musically, “WOODGRAIN” is a blend of folk, progressive rock/pop, and contemporary classical music that draws influence from the work of Punch Brothers, Bruce Hornsby, Michael Manring, Jason Narducy, and Wintergatan.

The title “WOODGRAIN” (as well as the original working title “THE TREES”) is inspired by the fact that the violin, the viola, and the marimba are all instruments composed primarily of wood. “WOODGRAIN” is also the original title for the marimba solo “TWENTY” which blends folk and contemporary classical music.
